Michael T. Nogueira

Michael T. Nogueira, 47, of Key Largo, Florida died unexpectedly November 18, 1993 of cardiopulmonary arrest. He was the son of Manuel and Bella Nogueira.

Survivors beside his parents Manuel and Bella Nogueira are a daughter, Heidi Nogueira and a son Matthew Nogueira ; two brothers, Robert T. Nogueira and Jonathan T. Nogueira

Mike was one of our country's most decorated Vietnam Veterans, he was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" and four purple hearts. His highest award was the Silver Star which he earned in the Battle of Hue during the Tet Offensive in 1968. As a tank commander, he was surrounded by North Vietnamese troops and maneuvered his tank up against the wall of a church so he could only be attacked from 3 sides. During the battle, while seriously wounded himself, he killed two North Vietnamese soldiers in hand to hand combat. He also was the sole person returning fire. When found later, there were 11 dead North Vietnamese bodies lying nearby, as well as the bloody trails where several other wounded were dragged away.

Mike Noqueira was one of my closest friends in high school. We remained close after graduation even though we went in two different directions. He joined the Army and I joined the Air Force. I ended up spending 30 years on active duty with the last 26 years serving in the United States Coast Guard. He was awarded the Silver Star for his heroics in Vietnam. He contracted Chronic Mylogenous Leukemia which probably contributed to his early death. Mike was a very loyal person who was always there if you needed him. He made some mistakes during his lifetime but don't we all do at times? He was portrayed as a big hulk but really was a "Teddy Bear" at heart. I think of him often along with his parents and family. I pray that "God" has bestowed his blessings on him and that he watches over his former friends and family.

Mike, what no one in our class knew was that we were cousins.  I can never forget the family gatherings at our uncles vineyard.  We really raised hell with our aunts and uncles with Bobby.  Later, we hooked up at the high school and our friendship continued.  My wife Agnes, whom I started dating in October of 1963 have always remembered those fun times with you and Tony DeMello during those years.  Those thoughts we have of you are still there and always will be to this day.  On saying goodbye, I say this to you,  Im lucky  had you as my cousin and am thankful I had you as my friend.
